UN will “be totally irrelevant in five years” without reform | Bartłomiej E. Nowak

The United Nations is now debating who will replace António Guterres as Secretary-General once his second term ends at the end of the year. What kind of a leader does the UN need? Or is it that its problems lie somewhere else than merely in leadership? “Each of the candidates stressed that we need real leadership, and nobody wanted to say it openly, but Guterres seemed to be disappointed because he was so inactive (...) that the United Nations is today on the edge of irrelevance,” Bartłomiej E. Nowak, Member of the Forecast Committee at the Polish Academy of Sciences, told TVP World. “So this is a very, very difficult moment. I would even say a decisive moment in the UN’s history,” Nowak said, explaining that what hinders the UN’s functioning most appears to be the fact that after 80 years, its structure does not reflect the state of the world today, with great powers and old colonial empires bickering with one another while standing at the helm of the organization, ignoring the emerging African countries or the rising power of the EU. “Therefore, the skills of the future Secretary-General are absolutely essential in this situation, because if the reform does not happen this time, the UN will be totally irrelevant in five years,” he said. Join TVP World’s Don Arleth and his guest as they explore the candidates vying to succeed António Guterres, how rising rivalry among major powers has eroded the effectiveness of the post-Cold War international order, and whether long-overdue reforms to the Security Council and global governance can restore the UN’s relevance in an increasingly fragmented world.
